ADDRESSING
REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES: Work-related Repetitive
Strain Injuries arise from ordinary arm and hand movements
such as bending, straightening, gripping, holding, twisting,
clenching and reaching, all of which involve extensive overuse
of the flexor muscles that “close” the hands.
These common movements are not particularly harmful in the
ordinary activities of daily life. What makes them hazardous
in work situations is the fact that all involve continuous,
repetitive and/or static flexion (No-Movement – i.e.
“Gripping”.) of the hand, often in a forceful
manner, day after day, month after month. This eventually
leads to a pattern where the flexor muscles that “close”
the hands become more overdeveloped and powerful compared
to the extensor muscles that “open” the hands.
